A GIS is a university-based “scientific interest group”. It is a flexible research structure that allows universities to work together on targeted projects. It brings together researchers who are also affiliated with existing research units in French universities and abroad. GIS EIRE was created in January 2019 on the initiative on SOFEIR (French Society for Irish Studies), a learned society and an associative structure.

La Société Française d’Études Irlandaises (SOFEIR) est une société savante qui a été fondée en 1981 par Jean Noël, président (†) avec Michel Bariou (†) comme premier secrétaire, à Rennes le 21 octobre 1981. Elle fédère l’ensemble des chercheur·euses qui travaillent en France en littérature, sciences humaines et sociales sur l’Irlande. Cette association loi 1901 vise à l’approfondissement et à la diffusion des connaissances ayant trait à tous les aspects de la société, culture et littérature de la République d’Irlande, de l’Irlande du Nord et de la diaspora irlandaise. Pour ce faire, elle organise, entre autres, un colloque international annuel à la mi-mars et travaille en collaboration avec EFACIS (European Federation of Association and Centers of Irish Studies) et IASIL (International Association for the Study of Irish Literatures). Elle compte 130 membres à l’heure actuelle. Certaines publications de la SOFEIR sont présentes dans la revue Études Irlandaises. La SOFEIR collabore étroitement avec le GIS EIRE. Créé sous l’initiative de la SOFEIR en janvier 2019, il s’agit d’un groupement d’intérêt scientifique (GIS), une structure de recherche souple qui permet aux universités de travailler ensemble sur des projets ciblés. Il fédère des chercheur·euses qui sont affilié·es à des unités de recherche existantes dans les universités françaises et à l’étranger et qui travaillent dans les mêmes domaines de recherche sur l’Irlande et sa diaspora en un partenariat scientifique qui met en valeur la cohérence d’une recherche fondamentale. Today the History Department combines the specialist functions of the three former Departments. Following the death of Professor John Barry (1989) and the retirement of Professor John A Murphy (1990), the three Departments were merged under the chairmanship of Professor Joseph Lee. Since 1993, History has grown, expanding its specialisms, enhancing its multidisciplinary approach to the subject, and increasing its teaching staff complement. The History Department has approximately 30 full-time and part-time teaching staff, and is one of the largest Departments in the Arts Faculty in UCC. Undergraduate student numbers are large and growing, complemented by the highest number of graduate research students in the Faculty. The History Department has, also, in recent years become the most attractive Departments to visiting students, especially North American students.

L’ambassade est la représentation permanente de l’Etat français auprès des Etats étrangers. Le rôle principal d'une ambassade, et plus particulièrement celui de l'ambassadeur ou de l’ambassadrice, est d'entretenir les relations diplomatiques avec le pays hôte, de représenter le Chef de l’Etat et le gouvernement, d’informer le gouvernement sur l’actualité du pays hôte, d’assurer la promotion de l’économie, des sciences, de la culture française à l’étranger. Au sein de l’ambassade, c’est le consulat, ou la section consulaire, qui sont chargés de la protection consulaire et des démarches administratives pour les Français résidant à l’étranger ou y séjournant temporairement.
